As someone with chronic pain, I resent the way pain treatment has evolved. The only treatments allowed are the ones where you have to pretend the pain doesn't exist. Anything to actually help someone get even a little relief is vilified. The VA doesn't treat for chronic pain anymore. OK, they will make you set through a series of appointments where you play Let's Pretend with a Sadist who tells you that the pain is all your fault and the VA bears no responsibility for treatment. So the Veteran is left to their own devices. At least street drugs are cheap. "Thank you for your service" my a$$.
Do you suppose we could strike some sort of balance? Maybe not promote pain drugs to those that don't need them but make them available to those that could benefit from them? What am I saying? That's crazy talk!
I am lucky. I found a doctor that helped me find a way around the opioid craziness without visiting the Corner Boys. I seriously doubt there are many like this doctor out there. That doctor made a big difference in my life.
I'm glad you found someone. The medical industry is not about healthcare as I've found over many years taking care of my wife who has had a chronic illness from a young age. The horror stories I could share. Most doctors have no idea the effects of the medications they dole out, nor how to take them and even less how to get off of them. It's a monstrous racket all around and healing it seems, in most cases, is the last item on the agenda.
After my back injury in 1998 I was prescribed OxyContin and suffered from bad side effects. It was hell coming off it. I was prescribed a great pain medication, but it was very expensive and the insurance wanted me off it. When I moved and had to find another pain doctor he didn’t believe me that I suffered the side effects so he withheld the one I could tolerate and I had to take OxyContin again and prove that I couldn’t nor shouldn’t be taking it. I had to suffer coming off it again! Of course he just could have read my previous doctor’s notes!
I’m absolutely pissed that the Sackler family is not in prison for what they did to hundreds of thousands of people who many are dead. They knew how bad it was as did the corrupt FDA! There are lots more people who should be in prison! Good thing I don’t rule the world.
Our situations are nearly 180 degrees out of phase. But the medical establishment inflicts a One-Size-Fits-All solution. It is probably more of a One-Size-Fits-None Solution. Can anyone tell me how "mindfulness" is supposed to help one with chronic pain? The whole point of "mindfulness" is to concentrate on what you are feeling. Like focusing on the pain is going to somehow make us less aware of it. Who are these sadistic morons? I have a proposal for them. Give me a baseball bat and twenty swings. Then let's see how much "mindfulness" helps them with the resulting agony I will put them in. I bet they will be demanding some opioids by the handful. Then I can get the satisfaction of telling them to just pretend it doesn't hurt. Just sayin'.
Yep…I got sent to a behavioral therapist who wanted me to focus on my pain so it would go away. I never thought that would work since the pain was so insidious I could never forget that it was there. I agree. Let those who think that way experience the pain we are dealing with and see how helpful their suggestions are.
I saw both shows and Painkillers really drove it home with impacted families opening each episode. No one was safe from these insanely addictive drugs. Rush Limbaugh had a back injury, developed an addiction problem, and was arrested for prescription fraud. Too bad he didn’t use that experience to highlight this more when he was alive. Unfortunately I think he was embarrassed since it hurt his political position on drugs. Everyone has an ego and no one ever wants to admit when they were wrong. That seems to also keep many doctors locked into their protocols as well.
I don't think I can watch shows like this. I've had enough experiences myself and don't need to see it on screen to know how real it is. Our "healthcare" system doesn't train healers, it trains automatons that follow directives and swan around in clouds of false prestige.
Mother was in Hospice final stages. Crying out in agony due to shoulder pain. Hospice REFUSED to offer medication to a dying patient. The pain was arthritis and NOT related to the Cancer!!!
Unconscionable.
Of course, we fought this and she was helped, yet how many with no support at end of life are being tortured?

I'm so sorry about how they treat vets. I'm very glad you found a good doctor to help you.

And all the docs, nurses, and reps that play their positions. Thank God for you.
