I want a straight shooter doc too. For me compassion and caring look like honesty. Including the answer “ I don’t know. Let me look into that for you .”
My biggest problem with most docs is their arrogance. Most appear affronted when asked pointed , researched questions. Most. Not all.
AI I imagine lacks ego and insecurity so it does not respond to queries as if it being challenged and mortally wounded.
I'm fortunate to have one who's neither arrogant nor egotistical, but, like many of us, is frustrated that he is seriously curtailed from practicing medicine and is instead, checking boxes for the insurance companies who pay my bills and his income.
My only regret is I'll probably outlive him and have to find another trustworthy doctor.
As I read this I was thinking of my son who is an ENT resident . He is not arrogant at all however as a newer doc is is well trained in getting along to go along . Med school taught him his job is not to rock the boat if he wants to do anything of value for his patients. He questioned conventional wisdom much more prior to med school. I hope his deeply curious self reappears like a lion one day soon.
I guess it depends on one’s expectation. I prefer directness, accuracy, knowledge and put very little emphasis on “ bedside manner”.
Being a nurse retired after 44 years, I’ve seen a lot of people bamboozled by sub standard doctors who rendered great emotional support. Although it would be best for the physician to have all those attributes, in the end I would choose the former.
This doesn't surprise me. Thee interesting thing is "don't mistake this for lack of human bias" ask an ai chatbot about covid and vaccination and you will see how objective it can be. So apparently in creating the modeling for AI, in addition to ideological consideration, so was showing empathy. And the good news is that the chatbot (hopefully) will not begin to see too many patterns and be able to make more obscure diagnosis and recommendations based on available data.
Reddit physicians will not change their approach when shown these results because they still won't get paid. Still, I wonder if consultants or other specialists who are paid more than GPs would give the Chat box greater competition?
Thanks Jennifer. AI wins over the wretched, complicit in genocidal doctors. Shocking that even the computer has worked out that the vast majority of doctors are a disgrace to their once esteemed profession.
Thanks Jennifer. I'm 100% for a real, critically-thinking doctor. There are not many out there; I am glad that I subscribe to you Substack - thanks for all the great posts. Take it from a guy who studied EE at the MIT in the 1980's - AI? Run the other way! Peace. :-)

Until Chat GPT tells you to have Remdesivir foe breakfast...then you need to worry.
Right!
LMAO this is accurate. 🙌🏻

Interesting.
But I'm waiting for the time when instead of a PA, you first interact with an AI.
Then, we will see the real patient, i.e. the ones who, just like commenters in the blogosphere, really spew forth the venom.
Of course, as that begins to happen, those people will magically become erased from the system depending on the size of their wallet.
Maybe I'm jaded, but old age and 3 yrs of covid folderol will do that.
Besides, who ever thought we'd really be living in 1984?
