I am familiar with Dr. Malik, as he used to own a psychiatric hosptial where I live. I know physicians that used to work for him at that facility.
Dr. Malik and another physician Dr. Ali were federally indicted last week for “22 felony counts: conspiracy to illegally distribute controlled substances and to maintain a drug-involved premises, conspiracy to commit health care fraud, 12 counts of illegal distribution of a controlled substance, seven counts of making false statements related to health care matters and one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises.
The indictment says Dr. Ali, an internal medical specialist, defrauded Medicare when he falsely used Dr. Malik’s name and Medicare billing number to bill for health care services, including annual wellness visits. The indictment also says Dr. Ali illegally administered intravenous ketamine and a nasal spray version of the drug without authorization.”
The racket they were running was that Ali did not have prescribing ability for Ketamine but Malik did. So Ali used Malik’s prescribing ability to administer Ketamine infusions and Spravato administration. They are both looking at millions of dollars in fines and/or decades in prison.
But it does not stop there.
Dr. Ali is due in court THIS WEEK for charges of running an opiate pill mill where he prescribed opiate medications, including Fentanyl, to patients that he NEVER MET. Have a look at this website from the St Louis news. Read the entire story. It’s a doozy. https://www.riverfronttimes.com/news/st-louis-physicians-charged-over-illegal-ketamine-infusions-in-south-county-41634287
And good ol Dr. Malik? Well he is a pharma shill boy at heart. Check out the amount of money he collected from big pharma just in the year 2022. He is (was) a pharma speaker for ALL the psych drug companies. He made over $600k that year JUST from pharma dollars. Both in drug speaking and in “research”.
Who paid him the most “research” money that year? A company called Orexo. They are the producer of Zubsolv, a Suboxone medication. They have a few drugs in their pipeline, one as a competitor to Narcan. I wonder what they paid him a ton of $$ to research for them? In a clinic where his partner was “allegedly” doling out opiates to people without ever meeting them? Now why would someone in his office prescribe a boatload of opiates to people that they never met if they were “passionately researching” ahem I mean making money researching a med used to reverse an opioid overdose?! Let that sink in for a minute. Oh, yeah, his second biggest “research funding source” was good ol Pfizer. Wonder what he researched for them in 2022??
Then I had a lookie loo at the associated research funding category. Biggest payer was a company called LivaNova, who sells vagus nerve stimulators to treat “depression”. They are a medical device company not a pill pusher. Big money in medical devices. They paid him $216 THOUSAND dollars. The other $49k he was paid for associate research funding was from other companies such as Alkermes, who I suspect are going to sell their Lybalvi drug (currently FDA approved for Schizophrenia) with a new FDA indication for alcohol/opiate use disorder in the future as a competitor to Naltrexone. Research already shows that the Samidorphin in Lybalvi is a potent opioid antagonist, and is twice as strong as naltrexone is. Samidorphin was marketed as the anti-weight gain antipsychotic by adding it to the generic drug Olanzapine, a notorious weight gainer med. Another company who paid him research bucks was Sage pharmaceuticals, who just last month launched a new postpartum drug in collaboration with Biogen. We discussed that one in a post back in November/December.
This is just an example of TWO physicians who are in deep deep federal court doo doo, with one of them with deep deep corrupt pharma ties. Would you want this yahoo in charge of doing drug/device research? HELL NO! Yet pharma paid him as much as $500,000 for a years work in both 2019 and 2022. Half of that total was research. How many pharma companies outsourced the very research they use to claim safety and efficacy to this dude to research?!?!?
I am going to guess most pharma companies that formerly paid him big bucks ghosted Dr. Malik today faster than a high school boy sneaking his girlfriend out a window when his parents came home early.
The more you know. Pharma will destroy you when you get power and money hungry. We need a catchy name for pharma bucks. Something as catchy as Zuck Bucks was for election manipulation and fraud. I bet we can come up with something good here.
This kind of abuse goes on everyday in Everytown, USA. Granted the authorities are making a dent by prosecuting the bigger players who, in their lust for money and power, became careless in their pursuits. When there is corruption on all sides of the equation, it will continue to happen and the participants will only find other avenues to hide the money. Sad commentary. Thank you Jennifer for outing this kind of misbehavior.
I was curious as I was not familiar with those dr's names, and do live in MO, but then again I don't work in healthcare. Interestingly, I started with Dr. Malik's name, and he is still listed in some of those 'find a provider' websites, and is listed as a dr affiliated with Mercy Hospital. When searching Dr. Ali's name, he and another doctor and a chiropractor were also indicted in 2020 for running a pill mill operation. https://www.dea.gov/press-releases/2020/02/13/three-doctors-indicted-conspiring-distribute-oxycodone Malik's name was absent from that bust.
The saddest part of all of this is that we already seem to have a provider shortage. Then you factor in the corrupt and the criminals and there are not enough Dr's to go around. My mom's doc is a gem (I've been taking mom to her appts for ~5 years now), and she said their smallish practice is down 4 docs due to retirements and not able to even replace them. Mom is 85 and her doc is mid 50's so she is not likely going to need to find a new doc, but she is not accepting new patients. Mine is a jab pusher and need to change but I only see him once a year so I put up with him for now, dreading trying to find one that is decent.
