Socialized medicine sounds fine in the abstract because people think it will be free and easy, but most people I know in countries that have that system buy a private health insurance policy to access adequate health care. They end up paying twice for health insurance, once in high taxes and then again for private insurance. It's true that people who don't care much about their health can be taken care of by the socialized system for "free" (paid for by the very high taxes on the employed). This system may work in culturally homogenous and competent countries (like those in Scandinavia or Australia). But in the US every visit to the government doctor will be like taking a trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Socialized medicine is just another big government fantasy meant to seduce a gullible population into submission.

I am actually on Medicare with a BCBS supplement. My doctors wanted me to get the vaccine but it was never required so I could keep my coverage. I did get one Johnson and Johnson “vaccine” that caused health problems but ever since that one shot 2 years ago, the PCP asks about that and the flu shot and I decline. They quit asking.

Thanks Jennifer. I agree - social medicine is a disaster. I ran a business in Connecticut years ago. I had a distributor who lived in Sweden that made the trip to the USA to visit me. His stories about Sweden's "health care" system were truly shocking, delays of months to see a doctor, etc. If we stick to the basics of loving our neighbors and eliminating greed - we will be on the right path. I do not see that happening; except in small communities of like-minded people. Peace. :-)

Great post! I say all the time that there are two major options (with near infinite variations between them): You can distribute goods and services by price via the free market, or you can command control your economy and distribute goods and services via political clout.

There is no scenario in which government takes over and suddenly infinite healthcare appears.

Govt controlled medicine is a fully communistic goal. And just like communism it has never worked as beatifically advertised.

Now, part of the common man’s problem in grasping that this is never going to work is the mistaken belief that nationalized healthcare is supposed to take care of him . Wrong. It’s a deeply misanthropic/ eugenicist policy. The purveyors of these schemes never intend to care for anyone . They are only considering their own power and greed.

Never getting the shot, may sound crazy but I would rather let the Lord take me when it’s time than deal with all the nonsense. Take care of your own health as best as you can and pray.

Met a fellow on a job once years ago in California.

He was a Brit.

In the day, an open ocean swimmer.

Had leukemia and beat it.

A heart valve was damaged in the cancer treatment.

Moved to California.

In his 60s, doctors told him, it was leaking so badly he needed a new valve.

He couldn't afford it.

His friends pointed out "You're a Brit! You get free healthcare!"

He flew to London and went to the doctor and told him the Yanks said he needed a new valve.

Doctor looked him over, said yes, you do, but you've already exhausted your lifetime benefit beating leukemia.

Go home and have a nice life.

The joys of NHP.

Thanks Jennifer. As a Brit I know that the NHS isn't perfect. It's a victim of the modern beauracrats corporate madness disease. Drs & Nurses outnumbered by "managers" isn't true. However there are still too many salaries being paid to the back room staff. Current analysis is 53%-47% split in favour of clinically qualified professionals. The financial cost of the 47% no numbers available yet.

What must be entered into the UK equation is that the NHS gave medical care to the bulk of citizens who had zero care before it's creation.

My view of the USA systems, is that it appears to be far too heavily driven by price gouging at every stage. In an efficient & honest democracy that should be controlled & enforced. For the good of the people.
