Thank you for this information. So well said. My son went 2 years to community college, then worked full time as a Waiter-Bartender to finish the next 2 years of education in 4 years doing it part time. He had no student loans and owed nothing when he finished. Today he is a controller of a large muliti-national company and has made a great living. Like you said it just takes planning.
Thank you, Yes my son is special. He is 66 years old now. And will retire next year here in Arvada, Colorado. Allen has the wonderful wife and 3 - 30'ish year old kids that all live near by and come to family dinner about once a month with their kids and they are all raised right. I am so proud of him. He comes to see me at least once a week and just sits and talks, and we meet for family dinner, and even inbetween. Wonderful family.
And they all are so good to this old grandma of 88 years old.
Thank you Dr. Brown for doing what you do. it is much appreciated. I do enjoy your articles so very much.
For historical reference: My Room, tuition and board at CMSU in 1973 was a total of $1000 and my working class parents struggled to pay that. I know someone who went to an Ivy league college in 1970s. When they started total cost was $5000 and by time they graduated it had doubled to $10,000. An Ivy league college now is $80,000 or more.
I think I took out one student loan while I was pursuing my advanced education. I knew I wasn’t ready to go to college right out of high school. I got a job. Then I enlisted in the Air Force. My Air Force specialty kept me away from home about 80% of the time. I managed to take classes and build credits towards a degree. When I finished I had earned an MBA. I had racked up a massive student loan debt of < $1000. About that time my sons and wife started going to college. Their school of choice was the University of Alaska which was 6 blocks from our home. They ended taking out small student loans over the course of their studies. I paid all of their loans off early. I am proud that I managed to put myself and my family through college. The Harris / Biden Administration “Student Loan Forgiveness” program quietly enraged me. I managed to get all four of us through our undergrad degrees on an E-5 salary. Why should I have to pay for the >$100,000 loans irresponsible people took out for useless (in many cases intellectually stunting) degrees? I have no sympathy for those who chose grievance degrees. You can be irrationally angry for free. Thank goodness the massive flow of money has been reduced. I do understand why the government created and then exploited the student loan disaster. People under crushing debt are desperate and easy to control.

The Ivy’s are ridiculous expensive!!! They are one of the prime candidates to reduce their tuition. People paying for a name.

wow, as a student in the lowest income category in the 1990s, my Pell grant was capped at $500/semester. barely paid for textbooks.
paying for all the tuition for 15 credit hours would be a massive increase.
