This may be behind a paywall so sharing it as best I can. A group of students have sued Johns Hopkins University for forcing them into online classes during the spring of 2020. The students argued that online classes in no way replaced the “college and campus life experience of an elite academic university”.
“Johns Hopkins initially asked the court to dismiss the litigation but after a federal judge rejected the effort, the university opted to settle given that “the outcome of this matter is uncertain” and “that a final resolution through the litigation process would require protracted adversarial litigation and appeals; substantial risk and expense,” according to court papers.
In addition to the $10 million being paid to students and former students, the university was ordered to pay $2.2 million to attorneys for the individuals.
Ms. Botts, who paid about $26,600 to attend the university’s School of Advanced International Studies as a graduate student, has been awarded about $16,200 for the work involved with being the lead plaintiff.
Johns Hopkins and a lawyer for the plaintiffs didn’t respond to requests for comment.”
My question is when are the rest of the college campuses going to do this same thing? If a refund wasn’t given for that spring 2020 semester, every kid should go after their university for shutting them down. How many college athletes were denied NBA draft exposure during their conference tournaments and the NCAA March Madness? College baseball World Series? Commencement exercises? Hundreds of thousands of kids were impacted by colleges shutting down. How many kids were already struggling and gave up, not returning to college after spring 2020? I know more than a handful of those. Many gave up on college when they realized they were going to be stuck in a dorm room with zero college life experience.
So many young lives robbed of so many things.
It was Spring & Fall of 2020. Our son finished up college online & missed his graduation. After 4 years of hard work & three worthless degrees. The whole college thing is a scam! And we’ll be paying for it for years to come. Big mistake.
Remember when it happened live.
Predictable.
Remember it was the big colleges with the biggest endowments who refused refunds.
Totally Predictable.
And now each one will quietly do the same as pressure mounts.
Keep it up, students!
