Andrew Bailey, the Missouri Attorney General, won a significant legal case against the People's Republic of China related to the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 7, 2025, a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr., ruled in favor of Missouri, issuing a historic $24 billion default judgment against China. This case, originally filed in April 2020 by Bailey's predecessor, Eric Schmitt, accused the Chinese government of causing and exacerbating the COVID-19 pandemic by withholding information about the virus's existence and spread and hoarding personal protective equipment (PPE), such as masks, during the early stages of the outbreak.
The lawsuit specifically claimed that China's actions, including monopolistic hoarding of PPE, harmed Missourians by causing direct economic losses, such as reduced tax revenue and increased state expenditures. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals had previously, in January 2024, revived the PPE hoarding claim after most other allegations were dismissed due to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, allowing the case to proceed to trial. China did not appear in court to defend itself, leading to a default judgment. Bailey has stated his intention to enforce the ruling by seizing Chinese-owned assets, including farmland in Missouri, to collect the damages.
This victory is notable as it marks Missouri as the first state in the U.S. to successfully secure such a judgment against China for its role in the pandemic, with the $24 billion award being described as six times larger than the previous largest judgment in Missouri history.
All of the states with land owned by China it is your turn! Go get em!
while I love the idea of taking back farmland which shouldn't have been allowed to be purchased by foreign entities, I'm strongly against the "default judgment" concept.
that tactic is used all the time by usurers who leverage government power to force citizens to pay unreasonable amounts to third party collection agencies without any direct contract with the citizens so encumbered. it's also used by municipalities to put out warrants for citizens who haven't received proper notification of the often-fraudulent charges against them.
default judgments are crap. surely there's a better way.
How does MO keep finding really good AGs this is 3 in a row. ❤️
