Government grants have always seemed a bit authoritarian to me. A centrally planned economy (that ALWAYS works out for the best) solution to a problem no one has. The jokes about ridiculous government studies are legion. If you are a big believer in government directed research, ask yourself what has that brought us. COVID 19(84) for sure. Not the cell phone. Not the many creature comforts we all enjoy every day. In fact, government/private partnerships almost always involve establishing a monopoly. This retards progress. Ma Bell and the FCC resisted cell phones for a long time before the monopoly was broken. Thank goodness the food supply has not been Federalized. Federal grants should be rare and only for things that the government uses exclusively. Otherwise the free market (devoid of monopolies) will provide better solutions than authoritarian bureaucrats.
