There is a fantastic series on HBO called “Not So Pretty”. I highly recommend you watch episode #1 called “Make-up”. It examines the talc contents in our health and beauty products.
The story revolves around the case of mesothelioma in a young lady in her late teens. Mesothelioma is cancer due to exposure to asbestos. It is usually found in the older population over age 65 who were exposed to asbestos before we “knew” it was bad. So how did this young woman get exposed to asbestos?!?!
Her make-up eyeshadow kit from Claire’s. Her Dior face powder. Her Clinique blush. WHATTTTT?!?!?!?!
The story also follows an OB/GYN who was exposed to J&J baby powder during his entire career. Shortly after he retired, he was diagnosed with mesothelioma as well. His story was one of tremendous guilt at recommending the product to moms, even doling out samples from his office. There is J&J baby powder in nearly every going home from the hospital basket that new moms received when they delivered their child.
Check out the ingredients in powder make-up products. The first ingredient listed is usually Talc. Talc is naturally mined from the earth, BUT….talc also has asbestos in it, usually in small amounts. Or so we are told. Turns out, when sampling a batch of talc, they only need to sample ONE TABLESPOON from a TWO TON LOT of talc. One measly tablespoon?!?! That test result determined if that entire 2 TON LOT of talc was safe. Oh noooooooo. That talc was then used in products we all use every single day. So much for safety. So much for “government testing standards”.
Here is a detailed article about the history of J&J knowing they had high levels of asbestos in their baby powder, but chose to cover it up. https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/johnsonandjohnson-cancer/
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has been known for decades for their baby powder. Number one ingredient? Talc. We started seeing an increase in cancer among people who used J&J baby powder. Turns out, the talc in the powder had asbestos in it. And it turns out J&J knew that. BUT THEY HID IT. How many people powered their babies booties with that? Powdered themselves with it?? In 2021, J&J settled a multi million dollar lawsuit for the incidence of asbestos in their baby powder, pulled the product from the shelves, and “revamped” their product. BUT IT REMAINS FOR SALE OVERSEAS WITH TALC AS THE PRIMARY INGREDIENT. And……they created a secondary shell corporation to “settle” the lawsuits for those who got cancer from their talc based powder. And once they created that shell company, THEY FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY, guaranteeing that J&J would not pay a dime in settlements for this huge debacle. Made millions from the product, then made sure they paid nothing for the legal consequences. https://www.npr.org/2021/10/21/1047828535/baby-powder-cancer-johnson-johnson-bankruptcy
Check out the ingredients on your powder based makeup products. If talc is the first ingredient, look at other products that use cornstarch or mica instead. They do not have the asbestos risk that talc does.
Makes you wonder what is in other J&J products like their baby lotion, soaps, etc.
Also makes you not trust that J&J covid vaccine even more, doesn’t it?
Yikes. I have some research to do in my make up bag!
😳I’m scared to look lol.
My grandmother died of ovarian cancer due to Talc per her doctors. And I loved the great smelling powders instead of perfume but stopped when I heard. Sigh.
Now off to my makeup cabinet......
